Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I not getting interviews?+

The most common reasons recruiters skip past a resume: no top-of-page positioning line so they cannot tell what you do in the first six seconds; responsibilities described instead of quantified outcomes; passive language ("responsible for", "helped with") that hides ownership; no clear, scannable skills block; document is too thin or too dense to compare against other candidates. The diagnostic isolates the top 3 that apply to your resume specifically.

How does the Interview Diagnostic work?+

You paste your resume text. We analyze it for the signals recruiters use in the six-second skim — positioning, quantified outcomes, action verbs, scannable structure, and skill clarity. We then surface potential resume issues and suggest practical edits to consider. Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored.

Is this really free?+

Yes, 100% free with no signup required. For AI-powered resume rewrites, job discovery, and interview prep, you can sign up for CareerStanding's free plan.

What is a callback score?+

The callback score summarizes observable resume signals such as clarity, evidence of impact, structure, and skill visibility. Use it to prioritize edits, not to predict interviews or employer decisions.

What is CareerStanding?+

An AI career intelligence platform. Beyond this diagnostic, it rewrites your resume to fix every issue automatically, discovers matching jobs from major and niche boards, tracks skills in demand and salary benchmarks, and prepares you for interviews with AI coaching.

Why Aren't You Getting Interviews? The Honest Breakdown

If you're submitting applications and hearing nothing back, the failure point is almost never your skills, your background, or your fit. The failure point is the six-second window your resume gets when a recruiter first looks at it. Most resumes don't lose because the candidate is unqualified. They lose because the recruiter could not figure out the candidate fast enough — and the next resume in the pile was easier to read.

What the Interview Diagnostic Actually Measures

The diagnostic evaluates the same signals a recruiter uses in their first scan and a sourcer uses when keyword-searching their inbox:

  • Six-Second Positioning: Does the top of the page tell the recruiter who you are, what level you're at, and what your signature outcome is — before they have to read the experience section?
  • Quantified Impact: Are your wins backed by numbers (percentages, dollar amounts, team sizes, timeframes), or are you describing duties? Numbers create memory; duties create boredom.
  • Ownership Language: Do your bullets use verbs that prove you executed (led, built, shipped, drove), or passive phrases that suggest you watched things happen (responsible for, helped with, involved in)?
  • Scannability: Bullet points outperform paragraphs. Short bullets outperform long ones. The recruiter is skimming on a phone in between meetings — make it easy.
  • Skill Clarity: Recruiters search their inbox by keyword. If your specific skills aren't visible in a clean block, they won't find you.
  • Length & Density: Too short reads as inexperienced; too dense reads as unable to prioritize. The 400-700 word window is the comfort zone.

The Three Reasons, Demystified

The check highlights potential issues in your resume. Common patterns to review include:

  1. The recruiter can't place you in the first 6 seconds. No headline, no positioning line, no clear target role. The reader has to do the work to figure out who you are. Most won't.
  2. You're describing your job, not your impact. “Managed a team of engineers” tells me your title. “Led 8 engineers, shipped 3 zero-to-one products to $40M ARR” tells me what you delivered. The first goes in the no pile; the second goes in the interview pile.
  3. Your language sounds passive. “Responsible for” and “helped with” suggest you were in the room when things happened. “Led” and “built” suggest you made them happen. Recruiters can tell the difference and they hire the second person.

How the Diagnostic Protects Your Privacy

This quick check runs entirely in your browser; running it does not upload your resume. Continuing to a full diagnosis saves your resume in this browser for the next step, where you can submit it for analysis. Requesting an email copy sends the generated report to our email service.

A Note on Callback Score (and Why It's a Sub-Badge)

We do compute a numerical callback score, but it's shown as a small sub-badge on purpose. A single number doesn't change behavior. The three concrete reasons — and the specific fix for each — do. Use the score to track progress over time as you iterate. Use the cards to decide what to actually edit today.

Beyond the Diagnostic: Career Intelligence

A clear resume can help a recruiter understand your experience. It does not tell you whether you're targeting the right roles, whether your skills match market demand, or whether your salary expectations are calibrated to reality. That is where career intelligence comes in.

CareerStanding goes beyond the diagnostic. It tracks which skills are in demand, helps you calculate your market value, discovers matching jobs from major and niche boards, and prepares you for interviews with AI coaching and company-specific intelligence. The diagnostic is the starting point. Career intelligence is the full picture.
